Pet-Friendly Hangouts Around the East Bay
If you’re anything like me, your dogs aren’t just pets, they’re family. And one of the best things about living in the East Bay is how easy it is to include them in your everyday adventures. From scenic trails and coffee patios to dog parks with stunning views, there’s no shortage of places where our four-legged friends are more than welcome.
Here are some of my favorite pet-friendly hangouts across the East Bay that Coby and Pippa give two paws up:
Newhall Community Park (Concord)
Wide open fields, walking trails, and creek access make this one of the best spots for your pup to burn off some energy. There’s even a dedicated off-leash area, and the Mt. Diablo backdrop never gets old.
Heather Farm Park (Walnut Creek)
This park has it all; walking paths, ponds, picnic areas, and a great dog park tucked inside. After your walk, swing by The Breakfast Club or A Sweet Affair for a snack and a pup cup on the patio.
Joaquin Miller Park (Oakland)
A local gem for outdoor lovers, lush redwood trails, shady picnic areas, and plenty of open space for leashed pups to explore. It’s the perfect weekend adventure if you want a hike without leaving the city.
Castro Valley Community Park (Castro Valley)
Right in the heart of Castro Valley, this spot has a big grassy field, a well-maintained dog area, and easy parking. Afterwards, stop by The Cannery Kitchen and Tap, Tea So or The Posh Bagel. All have dog-friendly outdoor seating for a post-walk treat.
Dougherty Hills Dog Park (Dublin)
Clean, spacious, and fenced with separate areas for large and small dogs, plus incredible views of the Tri-Valley hills. If your pup loves to run, this park is a must. For a refuel, head to Philz Coffee or Lazy Dog Restaurant nearby (yes, they have a dog menu!).
Todos Santos Plaza (Concord)
If you’ve been to a Thursday night concert here, you know dogs are part of the scene. There’s live music, local food, and plenty of open green space for pups to lounge and people-watch.
The Ruth Bancroft Garden (Walnut Creek)
Not just for plant lovers, well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome to stroll the pathways among cacti and succulents. It’s a serene, picture-perfect spot for a relaxing morning walk.
Bonus: Favorite Dog-Friendly Patios
-
Lazy Dog Restaurant (Concord, Dublin) – the name says it all, and the dog menu seals the deal.
-
Sideboard Café (Danville & Lafayette) – great food, great coffee, and happy dogs.
-
Plank (Oakland) – outdoor games, waterfront views, and pups welcome.
-
Peet’s Coffee - neighborhood favorite for morning walks.
-
Market Tavern (Dublin) – your neighborhood spot for good food, good company, and genuine hospitality.
Pro Tip
If you’re house-hunting with pets, think beyond backyard size. Consider proximity to dog parks, walking paths, and pet-friendly restaurants...because happy pups make happy homeowners.
The Takeaway
From the hills of Clayton to the redwoods of Oakland, the East Bay truly has it all for dog lovers. Whether you’re sipping coffee, hiking a trail, or relaxing at your favorite patio, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy life here with your best friend by your side.
